Abstract

1) Contractile response of smooth muscle of rabbit aorta and tortoise intestine to cerebrospinal fluid and serum was investigated.
2) CSF from healthy person did not elicit contractile response in the rabbit, aortic strip. Some samples from patient, however, produced contraction of the strip. The tortoise intestine reacted with contraction to CSF from healthy person. Serum produced contraction of the rabbit aortic strip and the tortoise intestine.
3) CSF potentiated the contractile response of the both smooth muscle preparations to serum.
4) CSF ani serum potentiated the contractile response of the smooth muscle hof rabbit aorta to norepinephrine, but did not affect the response to serotonin, and angiotensin.
5) Treatment of the preparations with the pharmacological blocking agents (phenoxybenzamine, deseril, promethazine and atropine) did not prevent the contractile response to CSF and serum. Treatment of the CSF and serum with trypsin or chymotrypsin did not affect the contractile property of them.
6) The above data indicate that CSF and serum contain unknown smooth muscle stimulating component.
7) From the neurosurgical standpoint, it is inferred that cerebrospinal fluid and serum will play some role on the production of vasospasm in subarachnoid hemorrhage.
