Abstract

The effects of gastrointestinal operations on the intestinal absorption of P-32-phosphate and glucose in the rabbits were studied at the early postoperative period.
The intestinal absorption of P-32 was markedly disturbed immediately after the gastrojejunostomy and gastric incision but recovered rapidly at 24 hours after the operations. In vitro uptake of P-32 by the isolated intestines was not affected to any-extent by gastrojejunostomy which had been performed 24 hours before.
When acute enteritis or peritonitis were complicated within 24 hours after the gastrojejunostomy, the intestinal absorptions of both P-32 and glucose at 21 hours after the operations were most markedly reduced. With the complications of volvulus, acute blood loss, _ nephrosis and acute hepatitis, the intestinal absorption decreased with the increasing severity of the above order.
The results indicate that the gastrointestinal operations per se do not produce any hazadous effects on the functions of the intestinal epithelia, and therefore the intestinal capacity for absorption rapidly recovers to normal if other diseases are not complicated.
