Abstract

Eight hundred and sixty leprosy patients at IK-SAN hospital (leprosarium)in Chon-Buk province were examined for their parasite infection, and some factors affecting the incidence were investigated experimentally.
1. Of 860 patients :examined, 87.4% were positive for intestinal helminths and 31.5% were for protozoas.
2. In helminthic infection, the incidence of Ascaris lumbricoides ranked highest in rate with 64.8%, followedd by Trichocephalus trichiurus (54.7%), Enterobius vermicularis.(8. 4%), Clonorchis sinensis(3.0%), Hookworm(2. 7%), Trichostrongylus.orientalis (1.7%), and Tapeworm (1.6%).
In protozoan infection, the incidence of Entamoeba histolytica ranked highest with 12.3%, followed by Endolimax ; nana (9.0°,). Entamoeba coli (7.8%), Giardia lamblia(7.4%), Iodamoeda butschlii(2.4%), and Trichomonas hominis (0.3%).
3. As to infectivity of parasites, non-infective cases. were 11.2%, single infection 32.2% double infection 37.9%, triple infection 15.2% quadruple infection 3.4%, and 5 species infection 0.1%.
4. 7.4% were positive for Paragonimus westermani and 11.3% were Clonorchiss sinensis by intradermal test.
5. As compared with normal healthy persons, leprosy patients showed the lower incidence of Trichocephalus trichiurus infection than that: of Ascaris lumbricoides, and also markedly lower incidence of Hookworm and Trichostrongylus orientalis infections with slightly higher incidence of Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia infections.
6. There couuld not be found any difference in the incidence of parasite infections between lepra bacilli positive and negative cases.
7. It was found that vegetables grown-in the hospital area were contaminated more with various parasites than in the area out of patient reach.
The vegetables in the hospital area were found to be contaminated with the following in decreasing order eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichocephalus trichiurus, Trichostrongylus-orientalis, Hookworm, and larvae of Hookworm, while the vegetables in the other area were contaminated with eggs of Trichocephalus trichiurus, Ascaris lumbricoides, Hookworm, Trichostrongylus orientalis, and Hookworm larvae in decreasing order.
8. in vitro experiment showed that young worms of Ascaris were more susceptible than adult worms to D.D.S, which brought about the death of worms at concentrated solution in Locke-Ringer´s solution. However, in vivo experiment in which dogs were treated with D.D.S. showed that D.D.S. could not suppress the growth of the embryonated eggs of Ascaris.
