Abstract

1. Arterial blood pressure responses of tortoise (Amyda japonica) to some pharmacological agents were studied.
2.DMPP, a ganglion stimulating agent, produced pressure rise preceded by slight fall. Atropine and hexamethonium´blocked the fall. Hexamethonium, bretylium, regitine and adrenalectomy blocked or markedly diminished the rise.
3. Wy-615, a DMPP-like , agent, produced pressor, effect but tachyphylaxis was observed.
4. McN-A-343, a ganglion stimulating agent of new type, produced no pressor effect. - The fall of pressure elicited by this agent was blocked by atropine.
5. 5-HT- produced :biphasic responses rise and fall. The fall was not observed after decerebration and bretylium-treatment. The rise wasr blocked by deseril, an antiserotonin agent.
6. Histamine produed depressor response, but the pressure rise was observed in some cases. The depressor effect of histamine was not prevented by promethazine, an antihistaminic agent. The rise, was blocked by promethazine and markedly diminished by hexamethonium.
7. The pressor effect of tyramine was antagonized by bretylium.
8. Reserpine-pretreatment did not affect the pressor responses to norepinephrine and tyramine.
9. The arterial blood pressure responses of tortoise to DMPP and 5-HT were similar to those of the warm-blooded animals. The responses to histamine, McN-A-343 and reserpine were different from those of the warm-blooded animals.
