Abstract


As a part of the topographical investigation of long bones macroscopical study was carried out as to the size, number, and location of the nutrient foramina in total- 1,200 of long bones of both upper and lower extremities obtained from Korean human fetuses. Followings were the results of these observations.
1. Macroscopic recognition of the nutrient foramina developing) in long bones became possible in the specimens of fourth fetal months, in which the ossification of long bone shaft was completed.
2. The nutrient foramina of long bones present in specimens of fourth to tenth fetal months were one in number in 53%, two in 16%, three in 3%, and four in 1%. This observation showed that it increased in number toward the midfetal months, decreasing thereafter gradually to the end of fetal months. Long bones containing more than five foramina were exceptionally rare. Bones having no recognizable foramina were found to be 27% in total specimens.
3. In most of the specimens studied the foramina were found to be located at the mid portion of the shaft, although they were seen predominantly in the proximal third of the shaft in both ulna and tibia.
4. The size and location of the foramina were almost identical, in the right and left halves of specimens, and showed no significant differences between the two series,
5. In comparison to the foramina of adult bones, it was shown that their location was similar in two, while their number was slightly higher in that of the fetus.
