Abstract

To obtain information’s as to the cause and extent of derangement in renal function in epidemic hemorrhagic fever (EH) and as to the recovering process, a series of studies on renal function was performed.
1. The renal. function in terms of glomerular filtration rate(GFR), renal, plasma flow (RPF)and maximum capacity for PAH transport (TmPAH), was reduced to about half of the normal at one month after the onset of the disease.
2. At six months,. GFR and TmPAH recovered up the lower limit of normal range, while RPF remained about 60% of the normal value.
3. The splay on the PAH titration curve, showed no deviation from the normal range either at-1 month or at 6 months.
4. Though the nephrons were generally underperfused, the glomerular activity tubular activity and tubular perfusion were well in proportion. A linear correlation was observed between GFRand TmPAH.
From these observations it may be concluded that in epidemic hemorrhagic fever the renal perfusion is curtailed by some unknown cause at first, to be followed by diminished glomerular filtration and tubular function, and that it takes at least six months in recovering the decreased renal function. It is further suggested that the most; effective treatment of renopathy-in EH fever should comprise measures which enhance the renal perfusion.
