Abstract
In order to see the influence of RES functional derangement on the adrenal cortex, RES function was deranged by the administration of collargol, and morphologic and functional changes of the adrenal cortex were then investigated.
1. With repeated administration of small amount of collargol, RES function was accelerated, while large doses depressed or blocked it.
2. When RES function was stimulated, 131I-collargol (injected as an indicator) disappeared rapidly from the peripheral blood, whereas it stayed longer 4 hen the function was depressed.
3. In phagocytizing the indicator, (this being measured, by the radioactivity of each-organ) the adrenal gland show similar response with the RES organs -spleen, liver and bone marrow.
4. When RES function was accelerated, the cortex became, thickened, especially in zona fasciculata, and both lipid and ascorbic, acid was reduced in amount with the granules becoming finer.
5. When RES function was depressed, cortical cells became atrophic, and increased amounts of lipid and ascorbic acid with coarse granules were noted.
Thus it may be concluded that the acceleration of RES function stimulated function of the adrenal cortex, and vice versa.
