Abstract

1. 563 school children between the ages of 6 and 11 years were examined on innocent cardiac murmurs. On each child, hemoglobin and hematocrit was determined and nutritional status was evaluated.
2. Approximately one half of the children (53.3%) were found to have cardiac murmurs.
3. All these murmurs were systolic in phase and were classified as grade I or II in intensity (Grade I : 76.7%, Grade II : 23.3%)
4. Of these 300 murmurs, 38.7% were heard in the 3rd and 4th intercostal space to the left of the sternum, 37.7°o at the pulmonic area and 23.6% at the apical area.
5. Those murmurs heard in the 3rd or 4th intercostal space to the left of the sternum or at the apical area had "vibratory" or "twanging" quality and those murmurs audible in the pulmonic area had a low-pitched, blowing quality.
6. No definite tendency in incidence of innocent murmurs, according to the age was seen.
7. The incidence of /innocent murmur was higher in the anemic and under-nourished children than in healthy individuals, and there was a tendency to increase in incidence of murmurs, by decreasing in-hemoglobin or hematocrit.
