Abstract

Although many studies on the mandibular third molars have been made by many investigators, most of those studies were related to clinical oral examination or the observation of post-extraction.
This survey has been undertaken to classify the mandibular third molars of Korean through dental radiography by means of Pell and Gregory´s suggested classification, which includes a portion of George B. Winter´ s classification.
The author selected 1359 cases, including 662 cases of male and 697 cases of female, were able to obtain among the out-patient of the Dental Department of Severance Hospital, Medical College, Yonsei University.
Following results were obtained:
1. It was found that the largest case number was Class I (552 cases) among the total case in the relation of the tooth to the ramus of the mandible and second molar and male cases were little less than that of female cases.
2. In comparing with the left and right of male and female, Class I was also the highest percentage (40.62±1.33%) in the relation of the tooth to the ramus of the mandible and second molar and there was no distinction of number in both of male and female, left and right.
3. The mesio-angular position of Class I was the lagest number (449 cases) among the male and female cases in the relation of the tooth to the rarnus of the mandible and second molar and the long axis of the impacted mandibular third molar in relation to the long axis of the second molar. There was no distinction of case Lumber in male and female cases.
4. In comparing with the left and right of male and female, there was little distinction in the relation of the tooth to the ramus of the mandible and second molar also, the long axis of the impacted mandibular third molar in relation to the long axis of the second molar.
5. In comparing with the percentage of the left and right of male cases, it was found that the mesio-angular position was the highest percentage and the right side (113 cases, 17.07±1.46%) was little higher than that of the left side(100 cases, 5.1I±1.39%) in the relation of the tooth to the ramus of the mandible and second molar also, the long axis of the impacted mandibular third molar in relation to the long axis of the second molar.
6. In comparing with the percentage of the left and right of female cases, it was also found that the mesio?angular position was the highest percentage and the left side (120 cases, 17.36±1.44%) was little higher than that of right side (116 cases, 16.66±1.41%) in the relation of the tooth to the ramus of the mandible and second molar also, the long axis of the impacted mandibular thrird molar in relation to the long axis of the second´ molar.
7. It was found that the highest percentage was mesio-angular position of Class I (449 cases, 33.04±1.28%) in comparing with the percentage of total of male and farnale cases and the left side (694 cases, 51.07±1.36%) showed little higher percentage than that of right side (665 cases, 48.93±1.36%) in the relation of the tooth to the ramus of the mandible and second molar also, the long axis of the impacted mandibular third molar in relation to the long axis of the second molar.
