Abstract


There are many reports concerning the effects of insufficiency or hyperfunction of adrenal cortex on the electrolytes level in the blood. But very few reports about the effects of the highly concentrated electrolytes in the blood on adrenal cortex.
Author intended to confirm this effect of the electrolytes on the adrenal cortex and this investigations were performed.
Methods and Materials
As experimental animal. Male rabbits weighing about 2 Kg. were used. The preparation and the infusion dosis of each salt-solution were as follows:
Sodium chloride: 10 per cent solution, 5cc
Magnesium chloride: 10 per cent solution, 3cc
Calcium chloride: 3 per cent solution, 5cc
Potassium chloride : 0.03 per cent or 0.5 per cent solution, 5cc
Both solution, same dosis
The method of the determination of each electrolyte:
Potassium and sodium : by Coleman model 21 of flame photometer Chloride:
by titration method of Schales and Schales.
Magnesium : byAndreasen´ s method.
Calcium : by the titration with E D T A
To observe whether the dilution of blood occur or not, the determination of hematocrit and total plasma were performed. The results were as follows :
1. After infusion of each concentrated salt-solution, each electrolyte level became normal within 60 minutes. Among them, only the level of . potassium became normal within 60 minutes, and transitional decrease of hematocrit and total plasma protein were simultaneously observed.
2. The common adrenal cortical response for 3 sorts of electrolytes except magnesium was the depletion of cytoplasmalysis and concomi tantdecrease of lipides in the zona fasciculata which was appeared within 5minutes following infusion of salt solutions.
3. Both sodium and potassium induced localized destructive changes in the zona glomerulosa and magnesium caused a marked necrotic lesion everywhere in the adrenal cortex.
4. In the group of magnesium chloride, the decreased calcium level in the blood was observed.
