Abstract

Since Fleming had discovered the lysozyme´ and lysozymesensitive Micrococcus lysodeikticus, many works have been done on the studies of lysozyme and the mechanism of bacteriolysis.
It is generally known that the lysozyme is an enzyme distributed in the human and animal body fluids. This is contained large amounts in the tear, and is also in the egg white abundantly.
In the present report the author studied the distribution of lysozyme sensitive micro-organisms among the normal flora of the E.N. T. field, and the following results were obtained.
1) Fifty four lysozyme sensitive strains were found among 953 strains isolated from E. N. T. field and air, Fourty strains of them were micrococcus and 14. strains were bacillus. The frequency of isolation of lysozyme sensitive strains in the each area was as follows.
Ear 7 strains (1.7%) out of 422 strains
Pharyngeal area 5 strains (2.1%) out of 238 strains
Nasal. cavity 13 strains (9.6%) out of 135 strains
Air 29 strains (18.4%) out of 158 strains
Pathological changes in the E. N. T. exhibited no significant influence on the distribution of lysozyme sensitive organisms, although in the ear group all the 7 lysozyme sensitive strains were isolated from only chronic otitis media cases. The distribution of them were higher in the cases of hypertrophic rhinitis and sinusitis than normal cases.
2) The sensitivity of the isolated strains to both lysozyme and egg white was roughly paralleled, and the strains expressed a wide variety of ranges in sensitivity, All of the isolated strains were obviously less sensitive to lysozyme then Micro-coccus lysodeikticus.
3) Saliva lysed the lysozyme sensitive strains but the pH of saliva did not influenced on the lysis. Of the antibiotics tested, penicillin and streptomycin lysed the Micrococcus lysedeikticus in high concentration but not isolated sensitive strains.
