Abstract

Bacterial flora of excised tonsils from 77 patients with chronic tonsillitis were bacteriologically studied, and sensitivity to various antibiotics of isolated strains and their Antistreptolysin O Titer were assessed. The results were as follows:
1) From the excised tonsils, 144 strains of bacterial flora were isolated and identified. Of these, 52, 1% were streptococcus and 27. 1% were staphylococcus, indicating that these two bacteria are the most important flora of tosillitis.
2) Streptococcus was very sensitive to Terramycin, Erythromycin, Albamycin and Reverin and was moderately sensitive to Penicillin, while it was rather resistant against Streptomycin, Kanamycin, Chloromycetin, and Neomycin, On the other hand, staphylococcus was relatively sensitive to Kanamycin, Streptomycin and Neomycin but showed resistance against Chloromycetin.
3) Antistreptolysin O Titer was less than 125 units in 48% ; 166 units in 24%; and more than 250 units in 28%, These findings indicate that Antistreptolysin O Titer is somewhat lower in the present series (Korean) than that reported in other countries. The majority of cases of beta-streptococcal infection revealed Antistreptolysin O Titer to be more than 250 units proving a useful criteria in diagnosis of tosillar focal infection, and in judging the indication for tonsillectomy.
