Abstract

The serum ceruloplasmin activity and the hemoglobin concentration were determined in 42 nonpregnant (control) and 98 pregnant Korean Women, and the following conclusions were obtained:
1) The serum ceruloplasmin activity and the hemoglobin concentration of the control subjects were 162±4.9(S.E.) unit and 9.2±0.1(S.E.)gm%, respectively, and were not influenced by age. Moreover, there was no correlation between the two values.
2) The serum ceruloplasmin activity and the hemoglobin concentration of the pregnant subjects were 290±16 (S.E.) unit and 10. 1±0. 1 (S.E.)gm%, respectively. These values were maintained fairly constant throughout the entire period of pregnancy and, moreover, were not influenced by the number of past pregnancies or deliveries, as in the control group, there was no correlation between the ceruloplasmin activity and the hemoglobin concentration.
These results suggest that the serum ceruloplasmin activity as the hemoglobin concentration of Korean women, both pregnant and non-pregnant, seem to be lower than those of the occidental, and also that there is no correlation between the serum ceruloplasmin activity-and- the hemoglobin concentration.
