Abstract


The author investigated changes in the ferritin and hemosiderin content of the liver, spleen, bone marrow, duodenum and kidney following multiple doses of hemoglobin to -normal rabbits by venous route over a period of 10 days or single dose of 20 mg. of iron to normal or unilaterally nephrectomized rabbits again by venous route she discussed the results obtained thus, and made the following conclusions:
1. when the normal rabbits are administered repeatedly with hemoglobin, the storage iron content increases moderately in the liver, spleen and bone marrow, slightly in the duodenum, and most markedly in the kidneys.
2. when the normal or unilaterally nephrectomized rabbits are administered with iron the storage iron content increases in the liver, bone marrow, duodenum and kidneies, especially more marked in the liver, spleen and bone marrow in the nephrectomized ones.
3. Both the ferritin and hemosiderin together take part in the increasing process of storage iron. The propotional relationship between both fractions in the process, however, is variable and seems to be dependant largely upon the nature of the tissue. In the liver, spleen and bone marrow where the reticuloendothelial cells are abundant the hemosiderin fraction increases more markedly than the ferritin, but this situation reverse in the duodenum where the dietary iron is absorbed and in the kidneies where the body iron is excreted.
