Abstract

A study was undertaken to know the feasibility of bacteriophage (phage) typing of non-typable staphylococci by various treatments, and the following results were obtained.
1. A considerable number of non-typable staphylococci can be typed when strains were treated with heat, trypaflavine, atabrine or lysozyme. The proportion of strains which become typable varies by the method of treatments. Heat shock showed the highest rate of conversion into the typable form and followed by the treatment with trypaflavine and atabrine with almost the same rates, and the treatment with lysozyme showed the lowest rate.
2. The phage patterns of treated strains vary according to the method of treatments. Some showed the same or almost the same patterns by treatments. There were some strains which become typable by either one, two or three treatments.
3. Some strains showing inhibition to some phages became to have full sensitivity to these phages by treatments. Some strains were also lysed, after treatment, by some phages for which they did not show any reaction before treatments.
4. Some strains become reactive after treatments for phages of single or two or more groups.
5. There were some strains which become typable as different phage types by various treatments.
6. Non-typable strains which become typable by the treatment showed the increased Adsorption rate of phage for which the strains become sensitive, as compared with the original strains.
