Abstract


The experimental result that brucella organism could survive longer in brucella immune serum than in non-immune one inspired the author to carry out a test to see whether the similar effect might also be observed in the respiration of the organism.
The result, however, was on the contrary: The oxygen uptake of Brucella abortus strain 19 in immune serum was less than one half of that in non-immune one.
In order to investigate the mechanism of this quite an unexpected phenomenon, several methods, such as heat inactivation of sera, absorption reaction and addition of complement, which may frequently be applied in this kind of experiment, were tested. And it was found that immune bodies together with complement might play a important role in inactivating the respiratory enzymes of brucella organism, whereas the physical effect of agglutination alone on the decrement of oxygen uptake was negligible in as much as heat-inactivation of immune serum greatly enhanced the oxygen-uptake rate almost to the same degree as in the inactivated non-immune serum.
The relationship between the death and respiration rate of brucella organism was discussed and it was postulated that the decrement of oxygen uptake due to the combined reaction of antibody and complement might be the cause of elongating the life span of brucella organism in immune serum.
