Abstract

An arteriovenous fistula is defined as an abnormal diversion of arterial blood into the venous system without any intervening capillary bed. The fistula may be congenital or acquired. For the various pictures, the condition has been written of and spoken of under various names. Such term as "pulsating angioma", "simple angioma", "varicose aneurysm", "´cirsoid aneurysm" etc. are purely descriptive of superficial menifestations of arteriovenous fistula.
Surgical treatment of most of the congenital lesion has been proved unsatisfactory. While acquired arteriovenous fistulas have been known to close spontaneously, the vast majority of them remain open and demand surgical repair because of the possible development of deletrious effects on the host, particularly cardiac failure.
A case of acquired arteriovenous fistula, between right femoral arter and vein, secondary to the gun shot wound during Korean war in 1950, and successfully treated by surgical excision and end-to-end anastomosis is presented and discussed in this paper.
