Abstract

The author not only measured chemically the storage iron in the myocardium of normal rabbits,
or that of rabbits under abonormal conditions, but also morophologically studied the ferritin
isolated from the myocardium of normal rabbits by cadmium sulfate.
The author has discussed the results thus obtained and arrived at the following conclusions. 1. It may be safely concluded that the contents of storage iron in the myocardium of mature
rabbits is 3. 5 mg per 100gm of wet tissue.
2. The concentration of storage iron in the myocardium of immature rabbits is lower than that of mature rabbits. However, as the rabbit grows, the concentration of storage iron in the, myocardium increases, and at about five months after birth it reaches the same level of concentration that can be observed in mature rabbits.
3. It seems that the concentration of storage iron in the myocardium of rabbits suffering from severe anemia induced by repeated removals of massive blood cells tends to decrease.
4. An increase of storage iron concentration in the myocardium of rabbits intravenously administered with a single large dose of iron has been observed. However, the storing ability of iron in the myocardium is very much limited, as compared with that of the liver, spleen and bone marrow.
5. The removal of the hypophysis, thyroid or both adrenals from the rabbits does not affect the concentration of storage iron in the myocardium. Therefor, the myocardial storage iron is not controled by these endocrine organs.
6. In the cardiac muscle of rabbits there does exist ferritin that can be isolated by cadmium sulfate.
7. The author would like to suggest that the storage iron in the myocardium might have a closer relationship with the function of the myocardium rather than the hematopoiesis.
