Abstract

The author studied on the sensitivity, to anti-phage serum, of ultraviolet (UV)irradiated phage adsorbed to host bacteria. For this experiments, the Klebsiella phage host cell system and UV ray of 2537A were used. The following results were obtained.
The antiserum-sensitive period of UV-irradiated phage adsorbed to host bacteria was essentially longer than that of normal phage and, the more the UV was irradiated, the more remarkable became the degree.
The minimum latent period, complete phage liberating time and burst size of the UV-irradiated phage, as those of normal phage, were delayed or suppressed by the action of anti-phage serum and, the earlier the adding time of antiserum was and the more the UV was irradiated to phage, the more remarkable became the degree of delay or suppression.
The antiserum-sensitive period in the latent period of UV-irradiated phage became similar to that of normal phage by passing the UV-irradiated phage through host bacteria. The suppression of growth, by antiserum, of UV-irradiated phage passed through host bacteria became also similar to that of normal phage.
The growth of UV-irradiated phage was lower degree than that of normal phage even though the adsorption velocity to host bacteria and inactivation of the activity by anti phage serum were similar in both phages.
