Abstract

Amylase activity of small intestine, liver, pancreas, and blood serum was examined in relation to starvation and to a protein free diet in rats. The amylase activity was measured by a modified method of Smith and Roe. The results obtained are summarized as follows.
1 During the starvation amylase ad.ivit- of the above mentioned organs and of serum declines parallel with a decrease of protein of those organs. The decrease of amylase activity of the serum was remarkable.
2. Feeding 10,% protein. diet after starvation of 192 hours, causes a quick rise of amylase activity of liver and small intestine in the fiirst 24 hours, a decline during the next 24 hours, followed by a gradual return to normal level.
3. By feeding of a nonprotein died, the amylase activity of pancreas declines rapidly while that of blood serum rises above the normal level after its transitory decrease. The amylase activity of small intestine shows no change for the frist 24 hours, but that of the liver decreases rapidly during the same period.
4. By feeding 10% protein diet after the protein free diet, the amylase activity of the pancreas and the small intestine decreases for the first 24 houres and then increases; but that of serum rises to a maximum in 24 hours then declines slowly.
