Abstract


An experiment has been made to determine what, if any, correlation there is bettween the intake of much red-pepper and the high incidence of diseases of the digestive system among Koreans.
Experimental materials and methods
In this experiment, 15 rabbits with average body weight of two kg. were chosen, and they were divided into three groups (A. B. and C.)
Group A was used as control; while each rabbit of group B was fed with 0.5g. of red-pepper per kg. of body weight every day, and the C group was fed with 59. of red-pepper.
In addition the 15 rabbits each were fed daily 200g of bean curd refuse and 509 of vegetables.
The experiment was continued for 298 days from Feb. 1 to Nov. 25 1957. During the period of time weighing of the rabbits, urine examination, blood examination. the liver function test, and other associated tests were performed twice a month in order to observe the various changes which might occur.
Then at the end of the experimental period all of the rabbits were dissected for a pathological. histological examination.
Results
The results of the experiment were summarized as follows.
Summary
1) In Group B an increase of the body-weight :Aras observed; while the urine -findings, blood picture, liverfunctions, and pathological- histological- findings remained normal.
2) In Group C a decrease of the body-weight possitive urine albumin test, decrease of both white and red blood cells, and decrease of liver function were observed.
2) In the pathological-histological study it was possible to observe in Group C degenerative change of liver parenchyma and of kidney tubules, hypertrophy of gastric mucosa, interstitial myocardids, thickening of lung capillary walls, and lung congestion.
