Abstract

During ten months from September 1959 to June 1960 a total number of 4804 leprosy patients (male 2806 and female 1998) accommodated at the Kaeng-gsaeng Won were the objects of study. Because of the constant movements of the patients,
the numbers of those who were investigated varied in the following headings.
Although the investigation was based upon the chart of the leprosy patients, we found that the chart was not complete enough to entirely rely upan. This made us to visit villages and contact the leprosy patients individally and directly.
The conclusions we have reached, therefore, are the results of the investigations done both at the institute and at the scatterring villages.
The causes of mortality of leprosy patients were classified based upon the chart of the same nature recorded at the institute during the 17 years from 1942 to 1959.
Whenever a leprosy patient dies, this institute applies autopsy ascertaining the cause of death attd the development of leprosy by means of the raked eyes and the pathoiogico-histological method, according ly the chart made at. this institute is comparatively accurate and reliable.
From the clinical view point and for they ` Of consumeness, the types of leprsy Were-d´ into two lepromatous leprosy and tuberenla leprosy. But as to those who already diedl t Madrid type which had been adopted by the tote remained unchanged.

1. So-rok-do when this investigation was done is situated off the Ko-hung peninsula at the Sout= - hern top of south Cholla province. Its climate is mild but its humidity is high.
2. The buildings accomodating leprosy patients! are scattered among seven villages. Out of them Chung-ang-ri has the most patients, then Shin-Saeng-ri, Nam-Saeng-ri, Kupuk-ri, Tong-Saeng-ri, Su-Saeng-ri and Changan-ri follow in the order of number of patients.
3. The total number of houses investigated was 420 and the total number of rooms was 1482, the aver-age number of patients living intone room being 3.
4. The number of the leprosy patients suffering from the lepromatwi type was three times as great as that of the leprosy patients suffering from the tuberculoid type. Most of them suffer" ing mild cases aiid those who were`-suffering severe and mederate cases were not many in number.
5. In term of sexes, the n.ale outnumbered the female by 1 : 1. 4, the actual figures be:ng 2806 for the male and 1998 for the female.
6. In terms of age, most of them ranged from 30 -49, those who were under 30 years of age were the next and the young and the old were not
many
7. The relationship between the types of leprosy and age seemd that most of them middle aged were afflicted with lepromatous and tuberculoid "leprosy, which lepromatous Ieprosy was dominant among the aged and the tuberculoid leprosy among the young.
8. The symptom of leprosy began to appear at the age of 04 in the earliest cases and at 50 in the latest cases while the most cases appeared at 15 to 19.
9. In terms of family relationship, more of them have had no family contacts.
10. 114 of the patients began to show the symptom of Ieprosy with decreasing of skin. sensation or anesthesia. The loss of skin sensation followed. Vesicle, nodule, edema, macule, infiltration, and disturbance of movement were not many in number at ´the symptom stage.
11. The symptom of lepromatous leprosy usually began with nodule- and that of tuberculoid lepr-
from trauma accounting for 66.85% and with too men 30.80% began to be afflicted with it during .delivery. In - connection with delivery :fhe cases of lepromatous leprosy were 7.2 times. as many as those of tuberculoid leprosy.
15. Most-cases came from blood .relation, cases inherited from both parents were the first in number, then from the mother side and the .father side followed.
16. Sanitation conditions were deplorable in general, and this sanitation ideas were primitive,
indeed.
17. 1/4 of the patients were illiterate and Some. of them could read the Hangul (Korean letters) or finished the elementary School.
18. The causes of death were mostly consumption and the second in number were ´weakness from leprosy (undernourishment). Recently the trend seemed to be reversed, that is, while the cases of consumption decreased, the cases of canter
osy with macule.. and liver disease seemed to be-increasing.
12. Leprosy-began to. show its syptom mostly at 19. The rate of mortality was highest among
