Abstract

5-hydroxytryptarnine, which has attracted much attention of physiologist and pharmacologist recently, was examined for its effect on the salivary secretion in the dog.
The result was as follows :
1) Single dose of 5-hydroxytryptamine (up to 50 ug/kg) did not provoke the salivary secretion.
2) Intravenous constant infusion of 5-hydroxytryptamine in small doses (up to 20 lag/kg/min.) did not produce the salivary secretion.
3) Intravenous infusion of larger doses (60^130 Fig/kg/min.) provoked slight secretion in some cases (3 out of 10 tried), while intraarterial infusion of the same dose provoked profuse secretion.
4) Salivary response to 5-hydroxytryptamine is blocked or depressed by atropine; d.benamine and chlon. promazine, while hexamethonium tended to augment the salivary response and histamine augmented it.
5) Infusion of 5-hydroxytryptamine in larger doses usually elicited sustained fall in blood pressure.
