Effect of Some Drugs on Ciliary Movement in Frog´s Oesophagus

Abstract


Since Burn (1952) preparation of the frog´s oesophagus was used by many workers for the study of ciliary movement.
The author, employing the same preparation, studied effect of some autonomic drugs, especially concerning the difference of concentration of them, and the other drugs which are widely used in the field of E.N.T. on this movement.
The result was as follows :
1) Acetylcholinel0´5g/ml and pilocarpine 10-5g/ml accelerated ciliary movement in frog´s oesophagus, while acetylcholine 10`4g/ml and pilocarpine 10-4g/ml inhibited its movement. Their depressant action in the larger doses did not seem to be the real action on the ciliary movement, but due to the effect on mucus secretion.
2) Ciliary movement of frog´s oesophagus was inhibited by tubocurarine, nicotine and chlorpromazine, whereas dibenamine augmented it.
3) The local anesthetics, cocaine, procaine, and tetracaine, inhibited ciliary movement.
4) Boric acid, borax glycerol, zinc chloride, and mercurochrome, which are widely used in the field of E.N.T., inhibited ciliary movement, whereas menthol olive oil augmented it. Protargol showed no effect.
