Abstract


Abood and Gibbs found an increase of ceruloplasmin in the blood of schizophrenic patients. Akerfeldt re-ported the increase of ceruloplasmin observed in the schizophrenic patients was due to a deficiency of vitamin C. The ceruloplasmin, a copper-protein complex, contains more than 95% of total content of copper in blo od. In an attempt to find any relationship between the plasma copper and ascorbic acid under psychopathic conditions, the concentrations of these two substances were determined in the blood of schizophrenic and morphine addicted patients, as well as healthy normal people.

Results
1. The average plasma concentration of copper determined in 44 healthy Korean people was 123.04.32 TJdI.
2. There was no significant difference between the plasma concentrations of copper in schizophrenics and healthy people. The average plasma concentration of copper of 33 schizophrenics was 123. 25. 75 Tjdl ranging from 102.6 to 216.0 7/dl.
3. The average plasma concentration of copper of 18 morphine addicted patients was 176.65.75 TJdI, which is significantly higher than that observed in schizophrenics and healthy people (p<0.01).
4. The oral administration of a large amount of ascorbic acid to morphine addicts and schizophrenics who showed high level of copper in the blood for several days, resulted in a marked decrease of plasma copper concentration, indicating that an increase in the plasma concentration of ascorbic acid reduces the amount of the plasma ceruloplasmin.
