Abstract


An experiment has been made to determine what, if any, correlation there is between the intake of red-pepper and the high incidence of diseases of the digestive system among Koreans.
Experimental materials and methods.
In this experiment, 28 rabbits with average body weight of two kg were chosen, and they _were divided into four groups (A,B,C, and D)
Group A was used as control; while each rabbit of group B was fed with O.,5 g of red-pepper per kg of body weight every day, and the C group was fed with 5 g of red-Tepper, and the D group was fed with 10 g of red-pepper.
In addition the 28 rabbits each were fed daily 200 g of bean curd rests and 100 g of vegetables.
The experiment was continued for 13 months. During the period of time, weighing of the rabbits, urine examination, blood examinatian, the liver function test, and other associated tests were performed monthly or, once in three month in order to observe the various changes which might occur.
The results of the experiments were summarized as follows.
1) In group A and B the increase of body-weight was observed .with no changes in the urine findings, blood pictures, liver functions, and other laboratory findings.
2) In group C and D. the decrease of body-weight, possitive urine albumin, and urobilinogen tests with increased specific gravity were observed. In blood picture .of ´these groups, the decrease of red blood cells, white blood cells, and plateletes were noted, while reticulocytes,. and sedimentation rates were increased. Decrease of potassium, sodium, and blood sugar, and increase of N.P.N., B.U.N., and creatinin were also observed.. In the liver function tests, group C and D showed a decrease of total protein and albumin with increase _.of globulin, and abnormal thymol turbidity and cephalin cholesterol flocculation tests, the increased serum bilirubin, decreased cholesferol total and ester, and. decreased alkaline phosphatase activity were also noted.
