Abstract

Thyroid gland plays an important role in the body metabolism. thyroidectomy results the dimunition of phagocytic acivity due to atrophy of thymus, spleen and lymph nodes. However, it has not been settled on the influences thyroid;upon allergic changes. Some investigators reported the dimunition of anaphylactic shock in the thyroidectomized animals. While, others described the aggravation of anaphylactic shock in the thyroidectomized animals.
The experiment has been planned to clarify the influence of thyroid upon the allergic changes in the nose of rabbits.
Material and Method
Normal rabbits iweighing around 2 kg were selected and divided into 6 groups for this experiment. Group 1 : a. Nonsensitized control: reinjection was made without sensitization.
b. Control: Sensitized and reinjected.
Group 2 : Sensitized and reinjected, after thyroidectomy.
Group 3 : Sensitized and reinjected, aftertransplantation of thyroid.
Group 4 : Sensitized and reinjected, following trasplantation of thyroid after thyroidectomy. Group 5 : Sensitized and reinjected, treated with thyroxin following thyroidectomy.
Group 6 : Sensitized and reinjected after transplantation of thyroid.
Each of the sensitized rabbits was injected I cc of normal horse serum per kilogram of body weight into the subcutaneous tissue daily for 4 days for sensitizing and O.lcc of normal horse serum per kilogram of body weight was given locally into the nasal mucous.
The unsensitized rabbits was given O.lcc of normal horse serum per kilogram of body weight into the nasal mucoua without sensitization.
Thyroid hormone used in this experiment was 0.2 g of thyroxin per kilogram of body weight daily. All rabbits were sacrificed at the end of 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 hours and 1, 2 weeks respectively after the final injection.
The specimen were prepared by H. & E. and Van Gieson stains.
Results
1. In the control of group I. macroscopically, edema, Congestion and hemorrhage, microscopically, cloudy swelling, fibrinoid degeneration, hemorrhage, inflammatory exudate and cells, neutrophiles. lymphocytes, eosinophiles, monocytes, and plasma cells were observed. These changes were intense at 2448 hours, however, gradually subsided in 12 weeks.
2. In group 2, marked degenerative changes and less inflammatory cell reaction than in control group I. were observed.
3. In group 6 less degenerative changes and marked inflammatory cell reaction than in control group were noted.
4. In group 4, 5 the inflammatory changes were similar in its intensity as in those of control group.
