The Effect of Ginseng Extract on the Respiration of Normal and Carbone Tetrachloride Treated Rat Liver Tissues

Abstract


Ginseng has been known to have various effects on the living body i.e., diuretic and hypotonic action as well as hypoglycemic effect in experimentally induced hyperglycemia. However, little information is available at present on the mode of action mechanism of Ginseng.
The present study was designed to secure some information on the effect of Ginseng extract upon the tissue respiration.
The carbon tetrachloride poisoning, on the other hand, is known to damage the mitochondria, disorganization of tricarboxylic acid cycle and swelling of cells. Therefore, the comparison of the effects of Ginseng extract on the respiratory activities of normal and carbon tetrachloride demaged rat iiver tissues might give some clues to the action site of Ginseng.
The author first compared the rates of oxygen consumption of normal and carbon tetrachloride treated rat liver slices and mitochondria and also observed the changes in oxygen consumption level by the addition of Ginseng extract following the Warburg´s standard manometric method.
The results obtained are summarized as follow:
1) Comparing to the normal liver, the carbon tetrachloride treated group showed the decrease in oxygen consumption rates both in slices(18.1%) and in mitochondria(26.6%).
2) The addition of Ginseng extract caused the increase of oxygen consumption both in normai(slice 25%, mitochondria 18%) and carbon tetrachloride treated(slice 16%, mitochondria 10%) liver tissues, the normal group showing a slightly higher rate of increase.
