Abstract


A series of studies regarding relation to thymus on allergic changes were carried out by many investigators. Prof. Yun, Farmer, and Harkavy reported that allergic reaction was inhibited by thymectomy. Ogawa, Ishida noted that. anaphylactic shock was aggrevated by the administration of thymic substance. Meanwhile, Choi recognized that anaphylactic shock was inhibited by the administration of thymic substance. The experiment has been planned to clarify the influence of thymus upon the allergic changes in the spleen.
In this experimental studies 128 young, healthy rabbits weighing around 900 grams were used and fresh horse serum was given as an sensitizing antigen. The rabbits were divided into the sensitized and non-sensitized, and subdivided further into 4 groups, which consist of the normal, the thymectomized, the autothymus-transplanted with thymectomy, and the homo-thymus-transplanted without thymectomy. Each of the non-sensitized rabbits was given one dose of 0.1 cc of normal horse serum per kg. of body weight into the parenchyma of the spleen. In the groups of the sensitized rabbits, the sensitization has been carried out by the injection of dose of 1.0 cc of normal horse serum per kg. body weight subcutaneously once daily for 4 days. And 15 days after the sensitization, the reinjection for provocation was given one dose of 0.1 cc of normal horse serum per kg. of body weight into the parenchyma of the spleen.
The non-sensitized and sensitized rabbits were sacrificed and resected the spleen at the end of 3. 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 hours and 1, 2, weeks after the final injection of the horse serum. The sections were prepared by Hematoxylin-Eosin, van Gieson´s. Biechowsky´s and Weigert´s stains, and submitted for histological examination. The results were summarized as follows.
1) The allergic changes occured in the spleen of the normal young rabbits with the reinjection of horse serum after sensitization by the same he-rse serum.
2) The allergic changes in the spleen of the thymectomized group were significantly milder than those in the normal group.
3) The allergic changes in the spleen of the homo-thymus-transplanted group without thymectomy showed enhancing signs than those in the normal group.
4) In the spleen of the auto-thymus-transplanted group with thymectomy, the allergic changes were almost similar in its intensity to those of the normal group.
5) The thymectomy inhibits the allergic changes in the spleen of the rabbits.
