Abstract

Anterior pituitary hormone and placental hormone were administered to twelve and eight rabbits respectively, in constant or increasing amounts between seven and forty five days, with the following results:
A. Anterior pituitary hormone:
1. An increase in the mean size of the islets and number of large islets in the treated rabbits; proportional to the amounts of hormone administered;
2. A proliferation of the small pancreatic ducts and meager or questionable new islets formation in the pancreas of the chronically treated rabbits;
3. Relatively well preserved proportion of a-cell and (-cell, even in the pancreatic islets of the treated rabbits;
4. Degranulation in the g-cells in the groups treated for 30 or more days;
5. No relation between the blood sugar levels and islets hyperplasia and/or hypertrophy in the pancreas of the treated rabbits;
6. An increase in the body weight of the treated rabbits.
B. Placental hormone:
1. Similar effects on the pancreatic islets and ducts as well as in the anterior pituitary hormone administered rabbits, but rather markedly increased in size and number of islets, and ductal proliferation than that of previous group;
2. Consistent with previous group in the proportion of a-and fi-cells, degranulation in the j6-cells of islets, relation between the blood sugar levels and islet changes, and body weight.
