The Effect of the Cold Exposure, X-Irradiation and Steroids on the Red Cell Osmotic Fragility in Rats.

Abstract


Present study describes the changes of osmotic fragility of the rats red cells, when they were exposed in cold environment, were irradiated by X-ray and were administrated with some steroid hormones e. g. androgen, cortisone and A.C.T.11.
Detailed serial studies were made in 15 cold exposed cases. G irradiated cases and 33 steroid injected cases : 15 androgen injected cases, 10 cortisone injected cases and 8 A.C.T.H. injected cases, comparing with 10 normal control cases.
1) In cold exposure cases, red cell osmotic fragility was increased for 12 to 15 hours after exposure in 0C, especially in 0.40.55% saline solutions.
2) In irradiated cases, red cell osmotic fragility changes were not so significant. In 2 cases, I hour after irradiation with 600r., red cell fragility was slightly decreased. And in 2 cases, 1 day after irradiation, the red cell fragility was nearly normal. In 2 cases, 4 days after irradiation, the red cell fragility was indeterminably increased.
3) In 15 cases of androgen injection, the red cell osmotic fragility was increased notably in range of 0.4 to 0.55o saline solutions. And there was difference in osmotic fragility changes in´ male and female rats. In ; androgen injected female rats,~the osmotic fragility was more remarkably increased than in 7 male androgen injected rats.
4) In cortisone injected 10 cases, the red cell osmotic fragility was increased and the rate was nearly similar with androgen injected cases.
5) In A.C.T.H. injected 8 cases, the red cell osmotic fragility was increased in similar rate with cortisone injected cases.
The mechanism whereby red cells are made more fragile in cold exposure and steroid injection i suspected as the results of cellular metabolic disturbances. To determine the exact mechanism, there should be in need of more detailed experiment:´-. with other kinds of stress and em iron-mental changes.
The osmotic fragility change3 of red cell in hypernatremia, the effect of the steroids in vitro. and in other kinds of stress comparing with steroid injected cases will serve to confirm the mechanism of fragility changes listed above.
