Abstract


Noise is a nuisance, for continued exposure to strident sound may produce impairment of hearing, harmful strain upon the nervous system and loss of efficiency of workers and thinkers, and interfere with sound refreshing sleep. The progress of mechanization in the capital city has intensified noise -levels to such an extent that severe mental and physical discomfort can be experienced by those subject to noise. The city noises complained of most are due to traffic, transportation and loud speakers. In many instances such intense noise is accepted as inevitable, but its control is, notwithstanding, a challenge to acoustical engineers. Exposure to excessive noise is considered as part of the price that modern man pays for a highly mechanized civilization.
Mr. Chu, Director of Seoul city health laboratory made a first noise survey on the [several main streets in 1962 and found the noise range to be 72-84 phon (sound unit), which is considered above the hygienic threshold. Recently Professor Shoji in Japan has established the hygienic acceptable standards for different occupational districts viz., as industrial zone to be less than 70 phon, semi-industrial or commercial area less than 65 phon and residential districts than 60 phon. He also added that in general noise--levels during night should be less than daytime by 10 phon.
This noise survey was to draw fact findings of noise-levels on various occupational districts, groups and resorts as part of basic data applicable to the preventive measures to be adopted by the authorities concerned. The noise -level meter employed in the survey was a type N. 1101-A, manufactured by the Rion Co., Tokyo. The measurement was made at a distance of 3 feet from the main streets, and others in terms of "Phon" unit. The figures of phon unit were the average range of 10 replications.
The following arc the findings.
1. The average noise levels on the main streets were 60-90 phon.
2. The noise-intensity inside the cars of various type were 64 105 phon. It showed the highest in the electric cars.
3. The noise levels at resorts surveyed reticalcd 50 90 phon. It showed the highest in the markets.
4. Industrial plants and others showed a range of 60 to 98 phon.
5. Residential districts showed as low as 45 to 65 phon.
