Abstract

Genda´s palatogram was used to differentiate and classify Korean Syllabic sounds, totaling 140 syllabic sounds beginning with first syllabic sounds of "GA´ line to the last syllabic line of "HA". Korean Syllabic sounds are the combination system of consonant and vowels, and 110 normal individuals were selected as the experiment group which represented 15,400 syllabic words sounds and the following conclusions were obtained:
1). According to the Palatogram, Korean syllabic sounds were classified in to five different categories, namely, type V, type C, type N, type H, and type U.
2). The frequency of Korean syllabic sounds appeared according to the palatogram in the following order; type V. type C, type N, type H, and type U. and regarding its anatomic form, type C3 appeared most frequently.
3). All Korean syllabic lines fell into the following five different categories.
Syllabic lines, "AH" "MA" "BA" "HA" appear in type V or type N; syllabic line of "SA" is completely included in type V; syllabic lines of "GA" and "KI-IA" belong to either type "U" or type "N"; syllabic lines "NA" "DA" "TA" were completely included in type Q syllabic line of "LA" was included in type H; and syllabic lines "JA" and "CHA" appear in either type H or type C.
4). The most significant finding in this experimentation was that the limitation of tongue movement was clearly demonstrated by the palatogram.
