Abstract

The author has been feeling that the various radiologic measurements on the structures of neck would it be significantly different between the Korean and the American which fact occasionally embarrassed the author for making a correct diagnosis concerning the pathology of neck tissue.
In this view of the fact that there has been no attempt to clarify this problem, the author has performed statistical study on the development of the neck structures in healthy Korean, which included 214 cases of children and 20 cases of adults and the result were as follows:
1. There were great differences between the various measurements of neck structures in Korean and American children, especially in the measurement of retropharyngeal space.
2. The retropharyngeal space in Korean children was much greater than in American [and it measured up to two folds of that of American children.
3. The retropharyngeal space in Korean children was greatest in the age of infants, having a tendency to become narrower thereafter and stationary after the age of seven.
4. The retrolaryngeal spaces in Korean and American children were almost equal in their measurements except in the age of between o and 2, when the measurements in American was somewhat greater than in Korean.
5. The retrolaryngeal space had a tendency to become greater as the age increased in contrast to the findings on the retropharyngeal space.
6. The antero-posterior diameter of the trachea at the level of the 5 th cervical and 1st thoracic vertebrae were almost equal in their measurements and they became greater as the age increased.
7. The spinal canal in American children was slightly greater in it´s measurements than in Korean and the difference between the two was greater in the upper cervical vertebra.
