Abstract

It is an important problem to seek a practical method for correction of leg-length discrepancies in children and the ideal method is thought to be the one that stimulates the growth of bones of the diseased leg. Concerning this problem, there has been many discussions on the results of animal experiments as well as on that of clinical studies.
Recently a few literatures have dealt with this problem applying Short-wave Diathermy on the growing bones of young animals, but the results reported are not constant. In view of this fact, the author performed a more systemic study upon this problem using Short-wave Diathermy on rat´s hind limb bones and the results were as follows:
1) The bones were definitely increased in their length in all groups treated by various time schedules.
2) The mean increase in length of femora and tibiae were 0.2-1.0 mm and 0.4-1.7 mm respectively, mean combined increase in length being 0.6-2.2 mm accordingly.
3) The increase of bone length is most prominent in the group treated for 60 minutes every the other day.
4) Dosis of Diathermy of 180 minutes daily appeared to be excessive, while that of 30 minutes is in-sufficient for ideal stimulation for the growth of bones.
