Abstract


It was the purpose of this investigation to study the susceptiblity of tarnish on the dental amalgams and dental gold alloys.
Tarnish was studied by immersing a total of 528 specimens for 60 days in twelve different media. Following were the results :
1. The higher the gold content in the dental gold alloys, the greater is the resistance to tarnish.
2. The wrought dental gold alloys showed less resistance to tarnish than the cast dental gold alloys.
3. The experiments showed that tarnish of the dental gold alloys progressed slower 9nd less in heat treatment than the other ordinary groups.
4. It was found that the mercury content of the dental amalgams was apparently a governing factor on tarnish.
5. The results obtained showed that the polished surface tarnished much slower and less than the unpolished one.
6. Higher degree of tarnish was produced in the sodium sulfide, sodium chloride solution and in distilled water.
Lower degree was noted in hydrogen peroxide, and air.
7. The results indicated that tarnish of dental amalgams and dental gold alloys contacted together in the same media occurred greater and faster than the separated condition.
