Abstract


Widal; hemagglutination and antiglobulin hemagglutination reactions of Salmonella typhi were studied on sera of non-vaccinated and vaccinated individuals and patients.
1. Among non-vaccinated group of 24 persons, Widal titers were negative(below 1:40) in 18 cases, 1:80 in four and more than 1:320 in two. Hemagglutination titers were below 1:160 except two cases whose titers were 1:320 and 1:640, respectively. Antiglobulin titers were below 1:320 except two cases of 1:640 and four of 1:1280.
2. Among vaccinated group of 59 persons, Widal titers were below 1:160 except, one case of 1:320:-Hemagglutination titers were below 1:160 except nine cases of 1:320, two of 1:640 and two of 1:1280. Antiglobulin titers were below 1:320 except five cases of 1:640 and nine of 1:1280.
3. It is difficult to evaluate the reactions of patients, as this group contains considerable .,numbers of non-typhoid cases.
4. The reactions of sera obtained from 22 typhoid patients within 20 days. following the onset of disease . were as follows. Widal titers were 1:40 in two cases, 1:80 in four, 1:160 in three, and the others were more than 1:320. Hemagglutination titers were ´1:160 in two cases, 1:320 in three, 1: 640 in seven, and the. others were more than 1:1280. Antiglobulin titers were 1:640 in four cases, 1:1280 in two, and the others were more than 1:2560.
5. From the above results, it would be reasonable to evaluate the results of three reactions as follows.
6. Three reactions showed increasing sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of typhoid fever in the order of Widal, hemagglutination and antiglobulin reactions. Close relationships were observed among three reactions.
7. Vi antibody was proved to be present in six sera of patients out of 22. Vi antiglobulin reaction positive in five cases. No Vi antibody was found in sera of non-vaccinated and vaccinated groups.
