Abstract

Animals used in these experiments were albino male´-rats weighing 120 to 150 gm. Animals were irradiated a single dose of X-ray. Irradiation was applied to either on whole body in doses of 5 r, 100 r, 200 r or to local spot in dose of 100 r. The objectives of this study were to evaluate´ alterations. of tissue mast cells at various time intervals following the irradiation.in various organs, 1.e., skin, tongue, esophagus, small intestine, vermiform process, large intestine, heart, liver, spleen, and bulbo-urethral gland. 1) Single whole body irradiation is associated with the decrease in the number of mast cells in the various organs at, ten minutes after the irradiation, reaches minimum value at 12 to 24 hours, and thereafter, increases gradually to approach their normal population at two weeks. 2) The number of mast cells in each organ seems to be inversely proportional to the radiation doses. The larger radiation dose, the time required in restoring the normal population of mast cells in´each organ is apt to be longer. 3) When 100 r is irradiated on the local spot, i.e., thigh, the number of mast cells in the skin of the irradiated thigh, that of unirradiatedside and in the various organs !begins to decrease at ten minutes after the irradiation, reaches minimum value at 12 to 24 hours, and thereafter, the number increases gradually to approach their normal population at two weeks. 4) Comparing the effects of local irradiation with that, of whole body irradiation, alteration in the number of mast cells following the irradiations are essentially the same. This suggests that alteration in the number of mast cells are due to general reaction, rather than a local reaction. 5) During the first 12 to 24 hours after the irradiation in which period the total number of mast cells are decreasing, reduced percentage of the normal type mast cells are accompanied with the increased percent age of the diffuse-type mast cells. But during the period in which the total number of mast cells are regaining their original value, increased percentage of the diffuse-type mast cells is :accompanied with the increased percentage of the normal-type mast cells until it reaches the normal percentages.
