Abstract

As surgery involves more or less the blood loss, a rapid and simple method :for estimating the amount´ ?=of circulating blood would be of great value for the proper ´management of patients during the preoperative and1postoperative periods.
The development of radioactive isotope dilution techniques for determination of blool volume has made The results were summarized as follows:
1. The mean blood volume per kilogram body weight in the normal twelve males were ;
plasma volume 40.416.19 ml/kg
red cell volume 30.521.85 ml/kg
total blood volume- 70.936.35 ml/kg
2.The actual´ blood loss incident to surgery turned out to be greater than usually assumed.
3. The transfused blood volume was inclined to insufficient than actual loss, particularly. in the. major surgery. Such results were observed in two thirds of all cases studied and the unreplaced blood volume reached over 400 ml. in a majority of patients.
4. There existed no definite correlation between the circulating blood volume and hematological findings, i.e. hemoglobin, red blood cells, and hematocrit. It appears, therefore, that hematological findings are not of any absolute value for estimating the circulating blood volume.
