Abstract


The author studied the cavity sealing properties of various filling materials, zinc oxide-eugenol cement, zinc phosphate cement, silicate cement, gutta percha and silver amalgam, by means of penetration of, aniline blue dye between cavity wall and filling material. The results were as follows. 1) The alcoholic aniline blue penetrate into the space between cavity wall and all of the filling materials. 2) Zinc. oxide-eugenol cement and silver amalgam were the most effective to prevent the dye from penetrating between the material and the cavity wall at body temperature and at temperature changesin the range of 4C to 60C. 3) Zinc phosphate cement was slightly superior to the gutta percha ir- excluding the dye from the cavity wall, but both of them gave unsatisfactory results in their ability to hold a tight margin. 4) Self-curing acrylic resin showed very good marginal adaptation in the test at body temperature, however the exposure of the self-curing acrylic restorations to temperature changes ranging from 4C to 60C showed that this good results were deteriorated by temperature variation. 5) Silicate cement showed very poor sealing qualities.
