Abstract


Radioactive sulfur(S^(35)) was subcutaneously given to the rats and the micro-, and macroautoradiography in accordance with the special metachromic staining with toluidine-blue and eosin were done to study the processes of the bone formation and development. Forty growing healthy rats were divided into 4 groups, 10 in each, with the ages of 1, 7, 15 and 30 days old respectively. The doses of S^(35) given were 20 μc/g for macro- and 100 μc/g for microautoradiography. The animals were killed 24 hours after the administration of the isotope.
Following were the results:
1. A selective S^(35) uptake was observed in the cartilage at the epi-, and diaphyseal junctions of the long bones.
2. Sulfur formed a complex with mucopolysaccharide, which appeared to play an important role in the bone formation and development. This stilfuric compound was dissolved out by nitric acid during the decalcification process.
3. The bone growth was most active in the 15 day old rats.
4. S^(35) was selectively precipitated in the chondrocytes, intercellular substance and in the mast cells of the bone marrow.
