Abstract


In this report gas exchange in the urinary bladder into which different volume of air or test gas was injected was desaibed.
Rabbit was laparatomized under anesthesia and the both ureters were ligated and cut off from the bladder. Urethra was cut loose in the lower pelvic cavity and polyethylene tubing was cannulawd to the bladder through proximal part of the cut urethra, preserving the normal blood supply to the bladder and surrounding tissues.
After irrigation of the empty bladder with normal saline, 25 ㎖ or 7 ㎖ of air was injected through the Bing and the changes of composition and volume of gas in the bladder were measured at the predetermined interval.
The rates of gas exchange in each gas component were calculated by separately measured changes in lump and composition of bladder. gas.
The results were summarized as follow:
1. Concentration change of each gas component in the air injected bladder showed similar patterns to that of subcutaneous gas pockets in course of time. The rates of decrease of 0₂ concentration and increase of N₂ concentration were more rapid in 7 ㎖ of air injected bladder than n in 25 ㎖ injected bladder.
2. The steady state composition of gases in bladder was similar to that of subcutaneous gas pocket, i.e. approoximately 6% of O₂, 5% of CO₂ and 90% of N₂.
Composition change of gases in pure N₂ injected bladder within 2 nd hour showed imperfection of steady rate.
3. The rates of gas exchange during 6 hours in air injected bladder were as follows: 0.52 ㎖/hr of O₂and 0.01 ㎖/hr. of N₂ were absorbed from and 0.22 ㎖/hr. of CO₂ was liberated into 25 ㎖ injected bladder, 0.21 ㎖/hr. of O₂and 0.01 ㎖/hr. of. N₂ were absorbed from and 0.05 ㎖/hr of CO₂ was liberated into 7 ㎖ injected bladder.
4. Diiffusion capacity of O₂ was calculated as 0.913×10^(-4) ㎤. min^(-1)·㎜Hg^(-1) in 25 ㎖ injected bladder and 0.94×10^(-4)㎤. min^(-1)·㎜Hg^(-1) in 17 ㎖ injected bladder, which are significantly lower values than that subcutaneous gas pockets or intestinal tract.
The difference in gas exchange rate between 25 ㎖ injected and 7 ㎖ injected bladder was attributed only to the difference in surface area of diffusion.
The thickness of diffusion barrier was estimated as 25X10^(-3)∼200 X10^(-3) mm in 7 ㎖ of gas injected baldder(internal pressure: 4 ㎜Hg) and 24X10^(-3)∼190X10^(-3) ㎜ in 25 ㎖ of gas injected bladder (internal pressure: 10 ㎜Hg).
