Abstract

Author studied on the cytoarchitectonics of the cerebral cortex in the Brodmann Area 3 of one hundred and seventy five Korean brains (male 94, female 81), and the thickness, the relative neuronal density, the relative glial density and cell density in each cortical layer and the cerbral cortex were observed by the age groups and the brain weight groups.
1. The thickeness of the cerebral cortex had almost fully developed at birth and that of 0∼1 year of age was 89% of the cortical thickness of the adult. It increased gradually until 20 years of age. Presumably the female cerebral cortex developed more rapidly than the male cortex until 11∼15 years of age and the thickness of the adult female was a little thinner than that of the adult male.
The thicknest of the cerebral cortex increased keeping pace with a increase in brain weight. The average values of the cortical thickness of the adult were 1.91 ㎜ in the male and 1.87 ㎜ in the female.
2. The relative neuronal density decreased rapidly until 2∼5 years of age and thereafter decreased slowly until 16-20 years of age. The average values of the adult were 562 in the male and 564 in the female. With increasing brain weight it decreased rapidly until the brain weight got 700∼900g and thereafter decreased verly slowly.
3. The relative glial density decreased rapidly until 6∼10 years of age and thereafter increased slowly with increasing age. The average values of adult were 804 in the male and 805 in the female, and they were higher than the relative neuronal density.
It decreased until the brain weight was 700∼900g and thereafter it increased with increasing brain weight.
The differences of the relative glial density in the infant and the adult brains were very slight and its variations in each cortical layer were not distinct.
4. The relative cell density (the relative neuronal plus glial density) decreased rapidly until 2∼5 years of age and slowly until 16∼20 years of age and thereafter increased with increasing age.
It decreased rapidly until the brain weight was 700~900g and thereafter decreased slowly with increasing brain weight.
