Abstract


The cytoarchitectonics of the Brodmann area of 2 in the cerebra of 178 Koreans (male 98, female 83) from the birth to 83 years of age were investigated and the development of the cerebral cortex, the changes of the relative neuronal density and the relative glial density with increasing age were fully observed, also their ´standard values of the Korean adult were determined.
1.The thickness of the cortex: The cerebral cortex of the new-born infant was thick of 1.93 mm, in 85 % of the adult cortex and the cerebral cortex of the infant developed very rapidly until the age of 25 years and it was in 94% of the adult cortex, and thereafter it developed slowly and gradually until the age of 11-15 Years toy reach the-thickness of the adult cortex which was 2.28 mm thick. With increasing of brain weight the cerebral cortex developed very rapidly until 500-700 gram of brain weight and thereafter it developed slowly and gradually until the brain weight was 1.100-1.200 gram, then, reached to the thickness of the adult cortex. In the senile cortex (male only), was not found any tendency of decreasing.
2. The relative neuronal density: The relative nouronal-density in the cortex of the new-born infant was 1.100 and it decreased very rapidly until the age of 25 years and thereafter it decreased , very slowly and regularly to reach the adult value at the age of 1620 years. The relative neuronal densities of the adult `,cortex were 500 in the left, 495 in the right hemisphere of the male, 495 in the left, 509 in right hemisphere of the female. With increasing of brain weight it decreased very rapidly from 1.193 in the new-forn infant brain of 300-500 gram to the infant brain of 500-700 gram and thereafter it decreased very slowly to reach the adult value when the brain weight was 1.200 gram. In the senile cortex it showed a tendency of slight decrease.
3. The relative glial density: The relative glial density in the cortex of the new-born infant was. 846 and it decreased very rapidly until the age of 25 years and it decreased very slowly to reach the lowest value of 649 at the age of 610 years. Thereafter with increasing age it increased slowly and gradually and even in the senile cortex it showed the tendency of slight increasing. The average value of the adult cortex was 704, and its difference between the infant and the adult values was slight as compared with the great difference the relative neuronal density in infant cortex and in the adult cortex. This constancy of the relative glial ity would be an evidence of increasing of the glial cells throught all life. With increasing of brain weight decreased very rapidly from the value of 877 in the new-born infant brain of 300-500 gram to the infant brain of 500-700 and decreased slowly to reach the lowest also when the brain weight was 1,100-1,200 gram. Ther after it continuously increased with increasing brain weight.
