Abstract

During 7 years from 1959 to the end of 1965, 51 cases of non-union of long bone fractures were treated by osteosynthesis and bone graft. Among those 51 cases 45 were followed up over 6 months after operation and their results were discussed.
1) As involved bones were concerned, the femur was most involved as 15 cases, and then humerus and tibia, ulna, both forearm bones, and radius were-involved in order of turn.
2) Mean time between fracture and operation was 23 months.
3) Telling the operative methbd briefly, the fracture ends were chiseled as far as good bleeding surface appeared simultaneously with removal of fibrous tissue in space of fracture ends.
4) Healing rate was 91.8% of 45 cases followed up because three cases were operated on mere than twice due to their failure. Mean healing time was 7.2 months.
5) In cases of open fracture, or ones who had been treated by open reduction, the healing time was late.
6) Healing rate in 8 months after operation was low in non-unions of femur or tibia fractures.
7) Considering that healing rate, in 5 months was higher in cases treated by bone graft than those treated by internal fixation and bone chips, the importance of bone graft could be confirmed in the treatment of nonunions.
