Abstract


Dividing 554 male mice of S.M. strain, into sodium chloide grci:p (which received subcutaneous .aline injection) and cysteine group (which received subcutaneous injection of cysteire) with total bcdy X-irradiation, experiments were carried out. The cysteine dose was 700 mg/Kg (adjusted to pH 7.0). Three group were as control group (sodium chloride). On the other three group, cysteire was injected into a subcutaneous injection at one of the following times relation to X-irradiation: 30 minutes,5 hours, or 23 hours prior to exposure. The serum protein pattern, the serum level of total protein, and the ratio of liver and kidney weight to bcdy weight were studied during the 21 days following a single total bcdy exposure to X-ray (120 r, 20 r/minute). The serum levels of albumin-globulin ratio (A/G) and total protein have been studied in irradiated mice, using paper electrophoretic, Kjeldahl and Biuret metheds, respectively. Liver and kidney weighs were determined with torsion balance.
1) Total body X-irradiation cause a rise of the level of A/G ratio and a decrease of the level of total protein on mdium chloride group and cysteine group. The changes come in 2 phases with respect to time, the first phase.begining within ore. day of. exposure, the second phase begining about 8 days later.
2) Cysteine greatly delays the increase in the level of A/G ratio at 1 and 8 days, and the decrease in the level of total protein of ´mice to X-irradiation at 1, 5, and 8 days.
3) Cysteine greatly delays the decrease in the ratio of liver weight to body weight of mice to X-irradiation at 1, 5, and 8 days. On the other hands, kidney weight shows no recognizable change.
4) Rather comparable protection is obtained when cysteine is injected subcutaneously to mice 30 minutes prior to exposure (p<0. 01). Injection, 5 hours or 23 hours before the exposure, exhibits no influence with respect
to protection. It may be inferred that cysteine greatly reduces the sensitivity of mice to X irradiation cn the blood protein and that the time course of cysteine protection reveal that the cysteine must be given 30 minutes prior to exposure.
