Abstract

Brown adipose tissue was described in literatures quite different from common or white adipose tissue not only functionally but also structurally. Although these fat tissues of some animals were studied carefully, the aging changes of them in white rats were not been examined.
The author was interested in this subject and the brown adipose tissue in the interscapular region of white rats aged 1, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months was studied histologically. All specimens were fixed in 10% formalin, embedded in paraffin and made into 5,u sections and stained with hematoxylin-eosin or orcein or by PAS or wan Gieson´s method.
The results were summarized as follows:
5 I. The typical brown fat tissue was found in well defined lobulation at one month after birth, developed
gradually untill to 6th month and thereafter without corresponding changes with age. ,
$r 2. The interlobular connective tissue consists mainly of collagenous fibers, those were in general, thin and wer in one month after birth. According to increase of age, the f;bers were appeared mere coarser and Undent. In the contrary, the elastic fibers were found eery scanty and fine except in the blood vessels. 3. The brown fat cells were in general polygonal in shape with one round nucleus which locates commonly
the center of cell. Binucleated cells which indicate probably a sign of amitotic cell division, occure also more
4
´less frequently in the center of lobules and in young rats.
In general, the fat globlets of the brown fat cells were more finer and smaller in one month after birth
d were grown to increase in size and number untill to 6th month.
5. The PAS positive substances were demonstrated in the cytoplasm of the interscapular brown fat cells of
e . all examined rats in some amount and were more abundent in young aged rats.
The typical, multilocular brown fat cells were in general, located in the central wide portion of each bules and in the periphery of@which mingled with the atypical or large monolocular fat cells in varying degrees. it is clear that the boundary of both groups of fat cells were gradually composed of intermediate type of be cells.
