Abstract

The author has made a study on the health status of individual teeth and the prevalence of dental caries at different locations on the teeth of 1,856 korean aged 13 to 50 years old for the purpose of obtaining some epidemiological informations which could expect to provide some basis for the extrinsic or intrinsic factors as the etiology of dental caries.
The findings obtained through this study so far could be summarized as follows; 1. The health status of individual teeth was decreased gradually in both javv by the increasing of age groups and it was disclosed that the progressive degree of caries were the maximum in upper central incisor and the minimum in Iower canine. 2. The health status of mandibular teeth was more poor than that of maxillary teeth and it was decreased with the order; lower canine, lower lateral incisor, lower central incisor, upper canine, upper first premolar, upper lateral incisor, upper second premolar, :upper central incisor, lower first premolar, lower second premolar, upper first molar, lower second molar and lower first molar. 3. The caries of anterior teeth were more prevalent in upper jaw than in lower jaw and the posteriors were the reverse. 4. The patterns of proximal caries attacks on individual teeth displayed a gradual decrease with ageing and the differences of proximal caries on same teeth were the most prominent in upper first premolar. 5. The prevalence of pit and fissure caries were most frequent among the lower molar, first lower second molar the next and lower central and lateral incisors were the lowest. 6. The prevalence of cervical caries were most frequent in lower molars and negligible in lower central and lateral incisors. 7. By the study of total and incremental pattern of caries at different ´locations on the teeth, it was possible to state that the internal as well as external factors were responsible for the cause of dental caries.
