Abstract

Two hundred and forty male mice weighing approximately 25 gm. were divided into 8 groups, each consisting of 30 mice.
The first four groups were used for in vivo experiment, and the other four groups for in vitro experiment. In the in vivo experiment, 2.5 mg of sex hormones, estrogen, androgen, and progestrone were injected subcutaneously at an interval of 24 hours for 3 days. The left femur was fractured manually on the day of last administration of the hormone. On the 2nd, 4th, and 6th day after fracture, each group of mice were sacrificed and both femora were recovered. Each femur was immersed for 24 hrs. in 30 cc of the Krebs Ringer phosphate containing 2uc of u3P3204
In the in vitro experiment, all the procedure was the same except that sex hormones were applied to the recovered femora with the incubation media on the 2nd, 4th and 6th days after fracture and were left for 48 hours.
Each femur was then dried, pulverized and dissolved with strong hydrochloric acid, and neutralized with Na011 tablet, and its content of P and radioactivity were determined.
The following observations were made%
1. P32 was deposited more in the fractured femur than in the non-fractured femur in both in vivo and in vitro experiment.
2. Sex hormones increased the amount of P32 deposition in both fractured and non-fractured femur, but the increase in the fractured femur was more remarkable.
3. it is concluded that evidently each sex hormone increases the deposition of P32 in bone, but it is hard to determine which group is more potent than the other in depositioning P32 in bone.
