Abstract


Since the appearance of antithyroid agents, radioactive iodine, free use of iodine, and the marked improvement of surgical treatment has made the management of thyrotoxicosis much easier. However, whatever method may be used, the treatment still need further improvement. The surgical management and the use of radioactive iodine still has their own complications.
This study is intended to investigate the possibility of clinical application of simplest method, ligation of vessels, and the use of radioactive iodine in combination. Through this method we might be able to minimize the complication after operation and possible malignant change by iodine.
100 male and female rabbits in equal number are selected for the present study. These are divided into 4 groups. Thyroid vein is ligated for the first group, thyroid artery for the second group, thyroid artery. and vein ligation for the third group. 16 rabbits are used as a control group. 4 rabbits from each groups are thyroidectomized daily for a week. The microscopic slides are prepared by routine method and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and P.A.S. staining. The results are as follows.
(1) After the ligation of thyroid vein, the venous congestion is marked, and the established congestion
persist as long as a week. Mild grade of parenchymal degeneration may be seen rarely.
(2) After the ligation of thyroid artery extensive degeneration or necrosis is rare. Such changes are limited
to a small area. In many cases the thyroid gland is completely free from any changes.
(3) There are little differences between artery-vein ligation and vein ligation alone at least in histological
point of view.
(4) The thyroid and parathyroid gland of rabbits are not entirely nourished by thyroid artery alone, presumably, bronchial artery is seemed to play a great role.
(5) According to this experiment little clinical result can be expected for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis with the ligation of vessels and iodine.
